Drill oil in the U.S.?
We haven't done it for 30 years, but gas prices are sky-high. Wouldn't it make sense to drill in the US? We could do it in a nature friendly way.

Yes it would make sense. Most of the oil rich areas are of the east and gulf coast. There would have to be a buffer between the shoreline and the sea where no oil could be drilled for (in order to avoid having a negative impact on the tourism industry in these states and areas). Also, as far as Alaska goes, they should drill there as well, there would not be much of an impact as how many people live and visit Alaska anyway. I know people say it's protecting the environment by not drilling there, but we need to protect are wallets and national interest as well.

There have been no significant discoveries of oil in the WORLD in 35 years! Most reserves have been known for a long time and there are no new large reserves being found. Oil is ENERGY and that is going to be problem #1 for both near and distant future. Example... Russian is a big producer but only has oil for the next 21 years! Peak oil production is here now and it will decline as the world oil runs out. Energy based countries like the U.S. are in for big trouble (likely depression) because there is NOT time to switch to alternative energy. The oil machine (consumption) is just too big! Get ready for huge economic problems... Hey...don't shoot the messenger it just the way it is.

We are drilling.
Figure out a way to get gas from coal (in a way that doesn't make tree huggers mad) and we can tell the middle east to get lost. Atomic energy, if it were standardized could make a lot of our electricity safely. Send the waste into the Sun. It won't bother us there.

We do drill in the United States. Katrina stopped all drilling in the gulf states, (I don't know if the drills are up and running as of yet) and I know here in California, we have lots and lots of drilling. I live outside of Long Beach, and there are many drilling operations down here. The one in the ocean look very nice during the night when they are all lit up.

We could do it in a nature friendly way but the Liberals and environmental nuts would rather us depend on the foreign oil in the "stable" Middle East. That's working out great isn't it?

I know all the nature lovers are against it. I myself love nature, but I feel it is time to drill in the USA. Gas prices are outragous, and it does not look like they are going to go down anytime soon.

I would makes sense but then they wouldn't be able raise prices at will for one bs reason or another. The goverment and the oil folks are all one in the same, and we are making them rich. All we do is complain, but no one really does anything about it. Why would they do something to help us aliviate the cost when they are making so much money?

I agree with the first answer, Everything we drill, we sell off to Japan and China...more corporate greed...We have more than enough to take care of ourselfs for hundreds of years at pennies a gallon, but big oil goes to where they get the most money and kickbacks...

The democrats wanted an energy crisis and now we have it. 8 years of Clinton and his short sided view of the environment being more important than fuel he stopped drilling, power lines, oil refineries and lots of coal, now dumb a s s democrats blame bush for the problem. It is really to funny.

a) There's no nature-friendly way to drill for oil.
b) There's not enough oil in the US to fill our demand for long.
