what is the best method to change the attitiude of a grown up person?

Life experience. Has to be experienced for ones own self. Give it time. Everyone tends to mellow out with time.

It is very difficult and must be done in baby steps. Getting them to change on a small point is the start. But, it must be done with kindness and compliments not with force or attitude.

If it's one with an open mind (rare individual), discuss (don't argue!) it with them.

Otherwise, hold a gun to their head and make sure they believe you'll use it. That only works while the gun is in place and will revert to previous attitude.

Conditioning is very hard to overcome (think religion! or politics)

there is no way you can change the attitude of a person, instead you improve his attitude. help him see the facts or reality that is happening around him. help him to realize that maturity requires no ages it requires on how you deal with changes and accept it. encourage him to face the fact that egoistic of a person is sometimes their defence mechanism to hide their weaknesses and thus it would not help them to grow, it would be a barrier for their self-improvement.

to sum up....

little by little help them to improve their self not by being arrogant for changing but by accepting changes in their heart.
