You could add more RAM, but honestly you're going to be limited by the processor speed no matter how much RAM you have installed. You could installed 2GB of RAM (assuming your motherboard supported it) and you still wouldn't go much faster. My suggestion would be to downgrade your internet speed some and save that extra money to buy yourself a new computer. Even the low-end Dell will run a LOT faster than what you have now...a LOT faster!!!

pentium III is not bad. any computer can run xp on a pentium III. However, I would recommend that you upgrade your RAM to at least 384 MB. That would be the 256 you've got and a 128 expansion card. You can find the specs of your computer in the manual that came with it, or online. With those specs, you can discover the max amount of memory a pentium III and your computer type will handle. Usually, a pentium III can be bumped up to 512 MB or 1 GB. That will really help speed things up.

Other things you can do to speed up the computer are defragment the hard drive, and clean up unnecessary files on your system. That usually helps out. Keeping your maintanence on a regular schedule will keep your computer at it's best performance level.

Also, SP2 is a pain in the neck. However, with XP you gotta take what you can get. Be thankful you aren't trying to run xp on a pentium II with 128 MB of RAM. I tried that one for a long time. It was slower than the Apple IIe I had in elementary school... and had about as much disk space. I had to revert back to 98 just to speed it up. You may also consider moving back to 98 for now. It's a very stable version of Windows, and works just as well. And it won't suck up all your RAM.

    Hope that helped.
