Nationalism is a greatly varied concept of human social and cultural identity that holds that nations (either ethnically or culturally defined) are the "fundamental units" for human social life, and as such take precedence over any concepts of universalism as well as any foreign concept of nationalism. Nationalism makes certain cultural and political claims based upon this belief; in particular, the claim that the nation is "the only legitimate basis for the state", and that "each nation is entitled to its own state." Nationalism also refers to the specific ideologies of various nationalist movements, which make cultural and political claims on behalf of specific nations.

    Pondering,

Socrates is pretty much all over it. Putting it a little more simply, it is the belief (fostered by governments) that one's nation, or national government, is the very best, and that we must defend it, with force if needed. And that our loyalty to our nation is a sign of our goodness and acceptability. All those who do not possess this loyalty, are looked down upon, and their motives are suspect.
