what is the difference between applied & pure mathematics?

The first is an obvious point about motivation. Pure mathematicians solve problems to answer questions in mathematics, applied mathematicians solve problems to answer questions outside mathematics-in physics, biology, economics, and so on. However, this distinction is often blurred and in many cases amounts to no more than a difference of emphasis. It is certainly not one of mathematical content: questions about differential equations in physics generated the development of new fields of pure mathematics; questions in logic about the axiomatic foundations of mathematics sparked the development of the computer industry. You will not see at university the clear boundaries between `pure' and `applied' that were familiar to you in your schoolwork, and some of the lectures (for example, on geometry) will be hard to classify as belonging exclusively to one camp or the other.

In pure mathematics, you will concentrate on techniques for developing proofs. In applied mathematics you will concentrate on modelling and methods of problem solving. The two disciplines are not disjoint.

Applied is much easier. You can understand the questions and you are based physically. U just have to know the formula's and you can apply them direct.

Pure math is playing around with numbers, figures and xs and ys. most of the time it is abstract and you are proving/discovering formulae to make applied maths easier. Mathemtics is far ahead of other fields and we have math research going on for which there are no current applications... u feel this when u do pure maths.

applied math is easier. you can use it to do everyday things, like balance your check book, or figure out the tip for your restaurant tab.

pure math is more abstract, and therefore more complex (ie using "x" in a formula)
