Keep up the good work!!! It's a very important issue! I KNOW IT'S LONG BUT ALL YOU YOUNGSTERS SHOULD READ IT! I've worked most of the last 40 years, I've paid my taxes (more so than some as I've also smoked that long) and my National Insurance and yes I've got a small private pension too. At the moment I'm fit, healthy late fifties and although due to retire in the next couple of years I'm not planning on doing so. As a private care assistant I don't face forced retirement! As a care-worker for the elderly and disabled I've seen the penalties of growing old at first hand, it's frightening the way some are forced to live. Even when they have families it's not unusual for their carers to be the only person they see for several days at a time! As the visit may be only half an hour long once or twice a day, can you imagine what that must be like! Some are prisoners in their own home and the only crime they've commited is growing too old to be seen as useful! Their generation didn't know that cigarette smoking, and those pints down the pub would add to the problems of old age! Even my generation were encouraged to do both! No Cinema Idol was seen without a Cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other! Most of them rarely grumble about their situations, they are usually too busy thanking us for every little thing we do for them, whilst at the same time apologising for not being able to do it themselves! Whether living in a tiny flat with just a meagre pension or having a decent home and a state + good private pension doesn't provide them with what they really need, the company of others! I don't be-grudge a single penny of my taxes that goes to them! They certainly paid their share in their time, most with the mistaken belief that they'd be able to retire while young enough to enjoy it! It's what they were promised when they paid the TAX! Young people should remember that the elderly they moan about are the parents, grandparents, or even great grandparents of others, perhaps even their own friends! How would they want some-one to treat their Mum or Dad?
