Odometer reading can be changed?
I am now in bahrain.I have a 1990 BMW which I bought from a guy who used to import cars from japan. The odometer reading showed me 130K kilometers. The car is in real good shape almost in all aspects.I have a doubt,is it possible to reset the odometer readings.????
It is a electronic digital odometer.even though we can reset???

It certainly is possible and is not necessarily illegal as others have said. With the digital readings like yours the car is simply connected to a computer via the diagnostic port and the odometer reading can be set to whatever you want. If you purposefully change the reading so it reads less distance than the car has actually done then yes it is illegal. If you are correcting the reading, for instance if a second hand dash pod has been installed, then it is perfectly legal.
To be honest the reading is probably correct. In miles it is just under 81,000 which for a 16 year old car is low. My '97 523i has 112,000 miles (180 000km) on the clock and still looks and feels like a brand new car. That's what you get for buying a BM! ;-)

yes it is possible to change ,,but on that one you would have to change the entire dash unit,,because digital units cant be set back,,i know i run a repair shop,,and have done so for 35 yrs,but what people do is go to a used auto parts place and buy one out of a wrecked car that has low mileage on it,,on the older car,s you could do that,,but now on the 2002,s and up,,you now have to change the computer also because the computer now keep,s track of the mileage,,and all you have to do is hook it up to a machine,,and it will tell you the exact mileage it has,,but on a 1990 ,,you could still change the dash,,and no one would know,,also the pedals can be changed ,,so looking at these really don't help either,,they are hard to detect,,if done right,,i hope this help,s you.

Of course. You remove the dash, and then get a small motor to rotate the odometer. It'll increase until it gets to 999...999 and then after that, from 0- what you want to. Stop at the time you need.
Here where I am from its a small trick that even the mechanics do it.

Yes, it is done, but it is dishonest and illegal.
