How do you stop a bird from trying to get into your window?

For the last six weeks we have had a single bird that spends anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour and a half trying to get into a specific window. He hovers, he bumps into, and pecks at the glass. He rests by hanging on to the screen below. What is this about?

Update:

He is not injured; determined and stubborn, but not injured

Paste decals onto the window, so he knows it's there.

What is on the other side of the window that attracts it?

He (or she) probably thinks it's a good place to nest. He or she may also "see" themselves in the glass and may be trying to "mate" with the image they see. I'd start by covering the glass on the outside with a with a non-transparent wax-coated paper to eliminate any chances of a reflection from the bird. Second, I'd contact your local wildlife center to see if they can offer any other solutions. You can also try placing a bird feeder in a tree away from the window (one with a mirror) to see if this will "sway" the bird away from the window and into the tree to nest or mate.

Hang a suncatcher in the window. Do you know if he is hurt ??

Do you have a bird house you could stick near the window, maybe he just needs a place to hide out. I have bird houses and feeders and water all over the yard. But once in a while we get a strange bird. If you can just check to make sure it's ok.

The bird can see his own reflection in the window, thinks it's another male bird, and is trying to attack it. Unless you get rid of the reflection, or the bird dies, there is no way to stop it.

  • better than just any decal, if you want him to stop get an image of a giant hawk and paste it on their, he'll stop.

what's viewable from the window? if it's something that may look like a food source, that may be what it's trying to get to. if the hawk doesn't stop him try and figure out what he wants inside.
