Can i be a teacher (in Canada) and not be poor?

I know teachers don't get paid much, but it is my passion. I REALLY wanna be one! However, I worry that once I finally become a secondary school teacher, my salary won't be enough to make me travel the world every summer. So to the teachers and/or to those who have teacher-friends, can I be a teacher and still be able travel the world (w/out worrying about money)? Or are teachers too poor to even travel the world?

*If this question is not for you, then please do not bother answering.

Thanks in advance to those who answer! ^__^

i'm a teacher in the states. i don't make much but i manage my money well and i always have enough to take a vacation and buy myself most of the things i want. i've seen the salaries of teachers in canada. it's similar to the states when you factor in cost of living.

i'm also single. if i had a family there's no way i could travel like i do. so the answer is yes. you can travel and have nice things if you're a teacher it just takes good money management and saving for the things you really want. cutting out unnecessary expenses.

hmmm this is a hard one. I feel that teachers do not get nearly enough pay!! After all they are teaching our future! I would honestly ask that you try it for awhile... you sound like you have the passion for it and that is something that is so sadly missing these days. Teachers with passion are desperately needed!

Now I have a couple of friends who are teachers. One does very well as her husband works as well. She lives comfortable and has every summer off... no need to work overtime in the summer. The other was a single income earner and had to leave high school teaching to become a college professor... he maxed out on his income potential so decided to try college. He is doing very well there and absolutely loves teaching there as college students usually respect teachers more.

Good luck and give it a try

I'm a teacher in the Seattle area, and it all depends on your priorities. We wanted a house, and with houses going for 500,000 or more and only having a salary of 30,000, we choose to put our money into our house and go camping for a vacation. If that's not a priority, and can live in an area where the cost of living isn't crazy like it is in here, then you can travel every summer probably.

  • the only way that would work is if you are single and put off having kids until you finished being a world traveler and open up a savings account...oh and pay off your student loans first...I don't mean to discourage you but ...I am a teacher and just we on a cruise recently but I had to save a little here and there to make it happen...if you are gonna teach get a Masters degree it pays a little more if you have one..

Unless you are a professor, highly unlikely, which by the way is VERY SAD!!!
