Activated sludge treatment is a process in which air or oxygen is forced into liquid sewage to develop a biological floc which reduces the organic content of the sewage. These biological processes increasingly rely on microbes, which rely on enzymes to do their work. Enzymes are large protein molecules that catalyze and speed up the chemical reactions involved.

In the end to organic content is reduced and hence the biochemical oxygen demand or BOD.
