the different irons are different lengths, and therefore, will make the ball go farther or shorter. Like a 9 iron is for 150yds, and a 5 iron is for 190 yds. The distances are different for different people, due to the way they swing is different. The higher numbered iron also have increasing amount of loft built in, so that the 7, 8, and 9 will go really high, for example.
