You will by far have a better time on the Kona side of the Island. There is more to do and the weather is better. Hilo is on the wet side, Kona is on the dry side. Everything is better on the Kona side. Better beaches, better diving, better hiking, better restaurants, better shopping, better golf. Hilo is also the more "local" part of the island and you might get some more authentic local food there, but you can still stay in Kona and take a day trip to Hilo. But even if you stay in Kona you should get of of Kailua-Kona and explore. Drive to the top of Mauna Kea, go to South Point, drive to the Kohala and Hamakua coasts. If you go to South Point, park your car in the parking lot there and hike about 2 miles east you will come to the most beautiful green sand beach. If you drive to the Kohala coast keep going a little further to Lapakahi State Park. It is the most beautiful snorkeling spot anywhere. It is also an ancient fishing villiage and quiet interesting. Also on the Hamakua coast, which is beautiful just for a drive, you will find Akaka Falls State Park, a nice little self guided hike through the rainforest. On the way there you will pass through Waimea home of Parker Ranch. Paniolo cafe is a great place for breakfast. There is so much to do on the Big Island. Just get out and explore and don't get sucked in to doing to much of the tourist-y thing. Have fun.

I went last summer and stayed in Kona. It was a lot prettier than Hilo. Plus, it rains a lot in Hilo. The island isn't that big. We spent a day and drove around the island and you can go see the waterfalls in Hilo, but that's really all there is to see there. The volcano is also on the Hilo side, but I was pretty much bored with it after about an hour. So, if beach and fun is what you want, then I recommend Kona. Kona has a lot of beautiful beaches and a lot of really neat shopping and things to do at night. There are also some great snorkeling places around Kona.

Hilo is great if you want everything in a more relaxed way , Museums ,Shopping , Restaurants and beautiful beaches .

Its a very large old town .

Kona is more busy in the way of tourists.

It has many historical sites and all the same as Hilo but a bit more as far as usual tourist sites.

I've been to both cities and I would recommend Kona. They have a wonderful sunset katamaran dinner cruise, whale watching cruises, lots of shopping and just a little way down the beach is a really fun snorkeling beach.
