How can I safely clean the litter boxes while pregnant?

I just found out that I am 5-6 weeks pregnant and I have 3 cats. I know that cleaning the litter boxes is taking a chance on developing toxoplasmas. However, my husband is being deployed so I am the only one here to clean them. Is there a safe way to clean them myself, such as wearing a medical mask and gloves? And of course washing hands with soap and water afterwards. These cats have been in our lives for too long so there is no chance of getting rid of them. I need help!!!!!!!!

The concern has always been about cats and toxoplasmosis. If you have had cats before for a while, then there shouldn't be a concern as chances are good that you've already contracted the disease and have developed an immunity to it. If your cat is strictly an indoor cat, it is unlikely that they carry the parasite because they get it from catching mice or birds or from other infected cats. You can also have a vet check the cat for an active infection. You can also have yourself tested for the antibodies. Have another family member take care of litter box duties. If this is not possible, wear gloves and wash hands thoroughly after litter box cleanings. You can read more about this here

The goal is to make sure the litterbox is cleaned EVERYDAY! It just needs to be cleaned frequently so the spores that cause toxoplasmosis do not form. They form after a day or two of sitting.

Get someone close to you to completely wash out the litter box (or just buy a brand new one). Make sure from then on you keep it cleaned no less than everyday. The reason Drs tell people to get rid of cats is because they don't trust people to clean the litter boxes the way they should be cleaned.

Toxoplasmosis is inhaled, however... if you are truely worried, go to your local hospital or drs office and ask them for a surgical/ medical mask.

As you know, it is VERY dangerous to clean a litter box while pregnant. Being that close to the bacteria can be extremely dangerous to your baby. BUT I have two pretty kitties and I love them to death and I wouldnt get rid of them either, so my advice: spend a hundred bucks and but a Littermaid litterbox. It scoops the poop for you, keeps it in a container and all you have to do is pitch the container when its full. You MUST buy the expensive, clumping litter, though. Other than that, use gloves and wear a mask when you clean it, even if you buy the litter maid. Good luck!!

A search indicated that the rubber gloves can help, and here's another site to search:

Health Tip: When Cleaning Fluffy's Litter Box (type in cleaning litter box when pregnant).

It also says on that page that you can get one of those self-cleaning litter boxes. Hope this will help.

There is NO way - someone else will have to do it - ask a friend or a neighbor for help

go to a support meeting for wives and ask some of the family support people

Have you asked your gynecologist, and what did he/she say? If cleaniing the litter box is not possible for you, maybe you could trade that chore with a friend, for something she can't or doesn't like to do.

Wear latex gloves and wash your hands afterward.

  • Get one of those automatic self-cleaning ones. They clean it for you and collect the waste in some sort of contraption that you can empty.

I googled them and found a lot of different brands...happy shopping!
