Are you allowed to have laptops aboard a Naval ship?
I'm getting a laptop as a "go-away" gift but i'm not sure if it's allowed in the Navy, aboard a ship. Does anyone know?

I'm a CTR3 on the Mason (DDG-87)
You can have a laptop onboard as long as you have somewhere to put it. Space is limited, depending on what size boat you're on. You cannot bring your laptop into classified spaces, but other than that it's fine. I bring mine on every underway.

yes, but understand that space is limited and you will want to lock it up at all times when it isn't in your own sight. Additionally, you may NOT be able to connect to the ship's internet/LAN at all. Some Commands allow it once you have had your comp cleared by the IT and Security guys, others will not allow them to be hooked up at all, but you can still use it to watch DVDs or play games on.
My husband uses his to do all his non calssified paperwork on, like writing up evals and some reports.

Yes you can have it on the ship, my son is in the Navy and he takes his whenever they go out to sea! USS Dwight D. Eisehhower, CVN 69, does that prove to you that I know what I'm talking about?

Yes, why wouldn't we? You may only use them in non secure areas of the ship however. Most of the people in my squadron have them and use them all the time on deployments.

I've seen officers with them.
Probably varies by command. Check with your CMC - that's why he's there.
