The human mind is very unusual. People sometimes feel a compeling move to kill someone when differences stand in the way between them. This feeling has moved through the human body since the dawn of time. This feeling is part of the reason we have the weapons we do. The other reason is for defence and to kill animals for food, clothing, or whatever reason.

How do you know we are currently the only beings in the solar system?

Weapons are a type of power, the bigger the "gun" the bigger influence. Now, what are people mostly afraid of? Big guns. This is a way to ensure other groups, or nations hear their voices and make sure they're aren't being seen as subordinate.

We need weapons that could potentially kill us all because of the absense of one basic human condition, trust.

We can't and don't trust the restraint of nations like China, Iran, North Korea, and in the past, the U.S.S.R.

So in summary, these weapons provide us with a security blanket so that we don't need to trust our world neighbors with our lives.
