Crime against women & children?

I'm not arguing against your premise. I'm wondering, though, from which data pool you are cullin your facts.

Just last year, I saw some data that reported the longest sentences being handed out were for rape, the average being even longer than for murder by about 18 months. That made me stop to wonder if perhaps we are allowing too many mitigating factors into our sentencing guidelines for murderers.

I wish I knew the source of that information, I think it would add some perception to your very noble argument. Perhaps another answerer will provide that info.

First, martial arts classes can be found. look in your community bullitin or district where classes are. If you see a regular MA teacher, be sure they're brutal and not a softy. This ensures that you will be trained in self defense tactics well. Some can be in it just for the money and the students come out knowing nothing. Oh woe to the poor unsuspecting attacker, or attackers. You could learn to pull one heck of a surprise on people who would prey on "weak looking" people. Call your local police department and find out if mace is legal in your area. Visit the Army surplus store. They don't sell illegal stuff. Always be sure that self defense devices are used by people of legal age.

Please remember to ask the police if what you want to get (such as mace) is legal. They will be more than happy to tell you.

If you live alone and you like dogs, get a dog. A dog can almost guarantee your safety, cuz an intruder is not likely to want a run in with a dog.

In the very unlikely event that an intruder would get by a dog have backups, make sure they're legal and know the laws about them.

NO!!!! the system we have should prosecute for the given crime committed. If you start adding pre-cursors, you start criminalizing thought, and feelings. We should allow for litigating/mitigating circumstance in sentencing, only after conviction. This is no different than the HATE CRIME laws, which would infringe, just a little more, on your rights to believe or feel or think, out of the mainstream. I am not prejudice, I believe that if you take the time to get to know people, you can find better reasons than, race, creed sex or religion, not to like them. I also don't believe that I need anyone Else's views forced onto me or explained more clearly until I understand.

We can't protect everyone- from everything. If you executed all the pedophiles (known AND unknown) tomorrow, in 50 years almost all of them would be back. Laws don't stop things from happening, they just take a few of the messed up people off the streets for alittle while- and help get some opportunistic politicians elected. All we can do is love & educate our kids- to be carefull & keep their eyes open. What goes into prison- always comes out (usually worse). It's the answer for nothing.

I am also an NC resident and have always thought that punishments for violent crimes such as assault, rape, and abuse were rather lenient.

Aside from pushing for judicial reform, the main thing is to transform culture in any way we can. If the female body is consistently objectified, seen as something to use or please others, and demeaned, as it is too often, then the law will not protect it as much because it is not culturally valued.

I don't have much idea about why crimes against children go underpunished. Maybe because children cannot defend themselves in courts?

Anyway, I think the main thing to do about situations like this is to inform people of troubling stories and statistics like you were doing in your question. If people increase their awareness of issues like this, it will be better. Also, everyone should do what they can to make sure that men, women, and children are all valued. Advertising executives could refuse to create commercials that demean women and reduce their bodies to commodities. Judges could be harsher on violent criminals. Diners could avoid harassing waitresses.

No matter who we are or what we do we should remember to treat everyone with respect in our everyday lives.

It appears that we are more interested in legislating protection for property than people.

I would contact my state legislators about the minimum sentencing for violent crimes against all people. As a woman, I really don't think I need more protection than a man but would certainly agree that children do (or at least that violent crimes against women and children should have sentencing guidelines that indicate some sort of parity with similar crimes committed against men).

There are people rotting in jail right now for carrying a plant across an imaginery line while rapists/molestors are living off state money.

The state was even purchasing viagra for child molestors in New York state.

I think that both Democrats and Republicans can agree that sex offenders should always be in jail, even if that means releasing a manchild weed dealer to make room.

Crimes against children need to be quickly and severely dealt with.

Crimes against adults, and those particular to women, are not as easy to sort out and deal with appropriately. A crime in one State may not be a crime in another, and enforcement is weakened whenever the crime is seen as more of a technical than a clearly immoral matter. Ages of consent differ, what constitutes consent differs, same sex types of offenses differ, and definitions of prostitution differ.

To Black Sabbath-YES! I do want to pay money to put people guilty of incest behind bars, as well as other sex criminals. If it means I, my family, friends, and other women are safer against perverted criminals, then YES!

To answer "What can we do," I say contact your representatives and let them know what you think the people you vote for and re-elect should do in the way of sex crime legislation. Also, check databases and registries for the local sex offenders in your neighborhood, warn those around you about these people-neighbors, schools, churches, day cares, etc., and keep your own family away from these people.

I absolutely agree with you. These animals pretty much get a slap on the wrist and are sent on their merry way. It's disgusting. I don't know what we can do to change this, other than protect our children the best we can. Luckily, we are able to know who SOME of these monsters are and where they live.
