What is the difference between a nervous breakdown and a brief reactive psychosis?
I am positive I recently suffered a nervous breakdown but may or may not have suffered a brief reactive psychosis (which I know is temporary). I feel almost back to my normal state now. What I am wondering is are they the same thing or are they totally different? Can you have one without the other but sometimes both? Are there different types of nervous breakdowns? All the information out there about nervous breakdowns is confusing because it is a generic term that is not recognized by the medical community. I have read info on both terms that says you can recover from one in a few days or a few weeks almost as suddenly as it happened and sometimes without professional help. The brief reactive psychosis info says it lasts 2-30 days and the nervous breakdown info says you usually recover but not always. No time frame.

Difficult to comment without preceding factors to determine cause. Recreational drug use, constant stressors etc can each be a factor and underpin how you will react, and therefore determine which it is.

Perhaps the "breakdown" may be a little more severe. If you are suffering because of someone else's negligence. Then you may want to document your emotional distress. You can do this by going to a hospital that offers services to help people who are mental. Like a "Psych Ward." Go there even if you already had a nervous breakdown. Tell them what's stressing you out. They should start a file on you, give you some good advice, and point you in the right direction with a "follow up" or something.
Good luck.

Nervous breakdown is a more general or layman's term but brief reactive psychosis is a medical term.

If you have a nervous breakdown, you will know it, and you will need professional help to recover.
It is possible to have near nervous breakdowns, but recovery is swift. But they are a warning that you need to change something.
