Because almost everybody uses the microsoft OS's..
That way, virus programmers tend to destroy microsoft in order to gain FAME....
And there's competition, competitors always look ofr ways to be better than the other.
Lastly,
Antivirus companies can also be your suspect...
Imagine, how can they get people to buy their products if they can't convince people that there's such a threat?
Bottom line, Viruses can be made individually or corporately for fame, competition or business strategy purposes.
Think about it...

Well, the main thing is, that those are the mostly used SWs. so the attacker can damage a majority of users by attacking MS SW.
the other thing is, that the security on other platforms, mostly security in Unix n Linux is very high and hard to breakthrough.
Also, I beliew that the unregistered versions of MS SWs are a main reason for virus atacks bcoz if we consider the recent attacks, most of the damage is done on 3rd world countries, which has a huge black market on MS SWs, so i suspect whethter MS is paying 4 viruses that damage their own unauthorised copied SW,

It's not Microsoft but actually Windows. This is because it is one of the widest used operating systems the world over.

in addition to windows being more widely used, it is also more fundamentally less secure.
