I believe the average is somewhere between 5 and 15%...but, they don't currently have a way for us to see the overall average. (I have made that suggestion to them, and you may want to also (via "tell us what you think" button at bottom of page). I personally have 29%. I've been trying to improve my ratio and my goal is to get to at least 30%. (I was at 6% a few weeks ago when I started that goal). I can totally relate to what you're saying.

Here are some strategies that may help:

    - Answer fewer questions and, try to answer more questions where you can get best answer

    - Pick categories and questions you can answer well. Answer them completely (but not excessively). Sometime include an interesting fact or tidbit that makes your answer standout. Include websites as references (so you prove your reliability) and give the user opportunity to learn more.

    - Avoid questions where it is unlikely for you to get best answer. For example, avoid questions that already have 20 answers, opinion questions, and try to be one of the first ones to answer

    - Vote for your own questions (once they are in voting...go to "my Q&A" to see your list...but, only pick your answer if you think it is the best

    - Go to the leaderboard & check out the profiles for the top few players, esp Jane Furrows & Kevin. They have some suggestions in their blog that may be useful. Also, look at their "best answers" and learn from the best.

    - If you're not already, spend time rating (thumbs up/thumbs down). Not only will you get points for that, but you can also learn what people have written to be selected as "best answer."

    Good luck & have fun!

If you're that bothered about points, find your own answers during voting and vote for them. My ratio is just under 10%, but I like to think that this is because people really did feel this was because the answers helped them. Maybe Yahoo should scrap the points thing altogether. It's about fun, and quality of answers, and enjoying 'the craik'.

$hit I just call it like I see it. I don't a higher percentage and I'm a long ways away. There is no special tactics just be real about your $hit. People often say please don't lie to me just be honest. Well they lie people want you to lie to them all the time and tell them what they want to hear. That will get your percentage up. But that's like cheating though. I plan to get there by being myself.

I think it is about 5% something like 15 best answers out of about 300 I guess, not too many, but who cares hey?
