$50 is a nice good number. also, any multiple of 18 (36, 54) because 18 is a number for good luck & fortune in Jewish tradition. mazel tov - having a bar/bat mitzvah is HARD work - i had one - and they deserve it!!

Maybe a book about Judaism, Jewish Teens, or Jewish History is a good idea. Jewelery is pretty common, but make sure whatever you buy is real. A CD is risky, unless you know what kind of music the person likes. I wouldn't but religious/ritual items unless I was very knowledgeable about Judaism. A good price range for the child of a good friend is $30-$100. You can always ask the person what they want for the bar/bat mitzvah, or ask him/her to make a list. You can choose something from the list so the gift will be a surprise. If none of the above sounds good to you, there is always an option of a gift card to a store the person might like. If all else fails, there is always the option of a card with a check stuffed in it! LOL.
