If you will not need to carry the disk from one place to another I recommend to buy a 3.5" external hard disk which can be of a big capacity. You can also buy a case which comes without a hard disk and add a hard disk of your choice. At a latest stage you may change the hard-disk with a new one.

If you will need to carry the hard-disk from one place to another, I recommend you to buy an external 1.8" or 2.5" disk. These small hard-disks are easy for carry and you would not have to carry many cables with you.

Check this site for various options and prices http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=HDD

I have a western digital one touch external harddrive (160GB). They make them bigger but I like this one. It works great. you can get one at newegg or any computer store (bestbuy, circuit city, etc).
