How do I stop my 7 month old German Shepherd from urinating in his kennel?

When my G/shepherd was younger, I would smack him when he urinates in the house. However, I learned it was a terrible habbit to spank dogs. Now I can't stop him from urinating when he is nervous and I can't get him to control his bladder when he is in his kennel. Please, what do you suggest?

you have to earn his trust again...take him out often, and when he goes praise him bountifully. He is just really afraid of you for beating him in the first place...shame on you. puppies have very small bladders, and must be taken out often.

How long are you leaving him in the kennel? Where is the kennel?

If you are leaving him in there for more than 3 or 4 hours at that age, you should expect some urine.

If the kennel is someplace where he can't feel safe while inside it (in the middle of a room, in a noisy area, in a dark basement, etc) then this may be some of the panic pee.

You may want to search the net for some crate training websites and look at Petsmart for some of their handbooks - they are really fabulous. It's hard to give you a diagnosis here as we can't possibly cover all the issues that may be taking place.

I'm glad that you've seen the light and no longer choose to hit your dog. It is a choice, not a habit, and hopefully you haven't permanently damaged him. Hitting dogs for behaviour problems can lead to a vicious cycle. They become afraid of the consequences, not linking it to the action. He may think that he used to get hit for being in the kennel - not for peeing in it, so now he is afraid each time he goes in it that he's going to get abused again.

Try starting over with the crate training. Leave him in for small amounts of time, 5 minutes, and then give him lots of love and a big treat. Do this for a few days. Then, move it up to 10 minutes. Keep going until he is able to be comfortable in it again.

Good luck to you and I hope it works out! : )

If your dog is urinating in his kennel, it either means his kennel is too big for him, or he's in it for too long. There is no way to stop him from urinating when he is nervous. Think of it as when little kids think they got lost in the mall or something. The kennel shoud be just big enough for him. you might think it's too small but if there is more than enough room for him to curl up, it's too big. Dogs usually will not urinate where they sleep unless they think it won't touch them. I would try buying a kennel one step smaller than one one you currently have. Talk to people at Petsmart. They should be able to help you pick the right-sized cage.

Never hit an animal! Now your dog has developed anxiety, nervousness, and possibly, very likely has ruined his kidneys. You have a huge problem which might not be fixable. Shame on you. Young dogs can not go long times without urinating. Next time buy a dog that is already housebroken. This is an all to often situation. Why didn't you read a book about housebreaking or have someone else train your dog. This is so sad! so, so sad!

Talk to your vet-you need to have a behavioral consultation. How big is his kennel anyway? It should only be large enough for him to stand up, turn around and stretch out comfortably not lying down. If he can urinate or defacate in one corner and go over to the opposite corner to get away from it (not lay in it), then it's too big.

Yes you are right spanking is wrong and ineffective.

Your dog has fear and anxiety problems. You should talk to your Vet about some solutions. A dog should not be left longer than 3 hours in a kennel.

Have you tryed to walk him,you need to walk him,or chain him up outside

you can brake him from this bad habit.Even through he is 7mos he needs to know to go to the door when he has to pea pea.It is sad you have to leave him in the kennel when you are gone.He wonts your love, put his nose in it and say no no,and then take him out side to mark his territory. When he or she does this, they will learn to hold it until you get up or you get home. Then say good dog, give a dog cookie.

When I had my puppies, my vet told us that if they peed in their kennels to either rub there nose in it to let them know it is wrong, or put their favorite toys in there so they will not want to ruin them
