can you transfer files from pc to pc using a usb cable that is the same on both ends?
or can you only use the standard cable where you hook up into the back of the computer

I do not believe you can do that....the PC will not recognize the other PC as a device.
In order to transfer your files, I would get a large USB Drive or portable hard drive and save onto USB stick then to the new PC.

You can do that with an ethernet cable if it is a crossover CAT5 cable, and you set up peer to peer workgroup and file sharing.
How big is the data you want to transfer? Could you just put it on a cd?
