What is the most peaceful country/nation/state in the world today?

We all know where the "political hotbeds" are, but where are the the peaceful places?

I'm not looking for feel-good answers. I'm looking for answers supported by facts.

Thanks!

I'll go along with Switzerland, but be aware that's it's very expensive. Most of Scandinavia is also quite peaceful -- Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden. Some of the European lowland countries -- Luxembourg, Lichensteing -- but, again, expensive.

Costa Rica has a very long history of neutrality, like Switzerland, and spends almost nothing on national defense. It is a beautiful, semi-tropical setting, and Americans are welcome.

Naturally, you'll do better there is you at least attempt to learn the language -- Spanish. But, there are many communities of English-speakers.

Also, I wouldn't rule out Canada, if you can take the cold.

Within the continental United States, I'd pick Vermont and Connecticut on the east coast and Oregon on the west.

    Good luck!

Switzerland, as mentioned, though, also as mentioned, they are slowly moving away from their neutrality.

Sweden is nestled comfortably between Norway and Finland en joys great neutrality and has a military mostly designed around defense.

Iceland is sparsely populated and quiet, crime is ridiculously low. However being a NATO member and in a location of strategic military importance, its peace is not very guranteed. Plus volcanos.

Canada also, as mentioned, but it is too big of an economic power to not be considered a player on the world stage.

A number of island nations do quite well, these are too various to mention.

Vatican City (Edit - I have decided to remove V.C. because although it is an independent country without dispute with any other nation, with the negative effects the Church has on other parts of the world I cannot include it as a peaceful country)

Nauru - No military only police, no disputes with other countries.

Monaco - Again no military no disputes

Bhutan - Royal Bhutan Military consists mostly of the Royal Bodyguard and the Police Force.

    Antarctica is quite peaceful.

Holy See could be defined as peaceful, in that they have no army, and have to rent a security detail from the Swiss.

Switzerland was one of the most peaceful, but it looks like they will lose their neutrality if they participate in the European Defense Force.

Hey, how about Sealand? It's a bit obscure, but they have never engaged in any war. It's kind of modelled on Bermuda, except Bermuda relies on foreign powers for their defense.

Addendum: In checking the sources, it would seem that those countries with the lowest percent of GDP spending on military do well, both in terms of peace and in terms of wealth building.

It is a bit of a tough question, because when you say peaceful, one must consider domestic tranquility, violent crimes, active engagement in warfare/border disputes, and entanglement in foreign affairs.

also, one must consider how repressive the government is, and how reliable the crime statistics are.
