Greatest American sitcom of all time?
I am a great fan of Third Rock From The Sun and Will & Grace. They both showed a terrific sense of irony and the performers were fantastic. What were your favourites and why?

M.A.S.H. Because it could take you from laughter to tears and back to laughter again, all in the space of 25 minutes.

everthing the american did in the 40 to 80s was absolutely spot on but like in uk its all finished, the stand up comedian is just not funny anymore and sitcoms here go on and on to a point of boredom and the american ones i have a problem to decipher what the hell they are talking about, lucille ball bonanza burns and allen i could fill this page up they were all very very funny, here we had miller tommy cooper and a host of others where has all that witty humor gone, its all so serious now, and certainly not laughable anymore

Seinfeld was able to produce a level of laughter that you just could not get from any other show. Some of the earlier ones were better because they dealt with more real issues. Later on, they got a bit crazy. It was still good then though. The "Shrinkage" episode was one of the best, so was the masturbation one.
The writers used a methods from stand up comedy to produce extreme laughter.

Wikipedia made me laugh, this is a list of common plots for most sitcoms... scarily accurate!
Attempts to hide egregious mistakes or acts of weakness.
Attempts to protect friends and family members from bad news.
Attempts to "correct" a mistake before others find out about it.
Attempts to hide the breaking of pacts.
Attempts to maintain an advantage based on deception.
Attempts to dupe someone so as to achieve an advantage.
Attempts to return stolen property before discovery of the theft.
Attempts to ignore certain characters.
Attempts to recreate scenarios.
Attempts to fix situations that end up making them worse.
good question!!

Seinfeld. I didn't watch it much at all when it originally aired, but I watch the syndicated re-runs almost daily. I liked that the show's characters had their own flaws, which usually led to more hilarity. If you haven't seen Kramer pimp down the street in the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, you're missing out.
