Sniffing to see what other animal has been here apparently a dog can tell if they are more dominant than another dog by smelling its urine. So it will wee there if it thinks it better than the other dogs that have urinated there.

Their sense of smell tries to pick out the local history of the area - how many dogs have been through here recently, if they were familiar, which dogs have claimed the area as their territory.
If the scent indicates that another dog has been through the area and marked, the dog will overwrite the previous dog's territorial marker with their own.

It's a territorial thing for dogs. They are checking to see if there are other animals' urine in those spots. They're looking for a clean place!

So they can check to see if any other dog has peed there. Dogs pee so that they can say to toher dogs "this is my zone now get lost" so what the dogs do is they sniff for the part where the other dog may have peed and then they pee there themselves to cover it up...

wilder canines lives in packs and intensely a lot territorial. lots of the packs being led with the aid of alfa men. there fore men used to mark their territories with the aid of urine smells. generally canines do not urinates there the place he fails to come across any canines smell. like whilst one get a clean domestic dog at residing house , if one used to coach the canines to urinate in a undeniable place, it used to urinate on the location for something of his existence. generally marking territories releases small quantity of urine yet wide-spread urination releases finished .
