OS Boot problem?

I recently bought a Dell and I tried to swap out the hard drive for the one I was using on my old computer. Now the computer won't boot windows for some reason. All the cables are plugged in securely and the hard drive shouldn't have any damage. Any suggestions?

+ Does your hard drive's master/slave jumper setting match the BIOS settings? Check on a Dell by hitting F2 (I believe) when the machine starts up.

+ Do you hear the hard drive when turning on the power? Sometimes electrical shock can do damage if you had not grounded yourself prior to installing the drive.

+ Is your BIOS detecting the hard drive at POST? If you have the graphical Dell logo, hit <ESC> to see the POST information. You should see your hard drive listed.

Did you have a second hard drive on your old system? That could cause issues when booting an operating system.

Also note that when simply swapping hard drives, your Windows operating system must be PnP compatible (and use the same hardware abstraction layer (HAL)) in order to add all the drivers necessary to activate/use your "new" Dell hardware. This means that you should have your installation CD handy when Windows asks for it.

If you are using Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 windows defines the boot location based on a hardware location for the harddrive. This can vary in different systems. If it is Windows XP and you have the CD you can boot from CD and it will have some repair options. You can repair the boot sector and it should set it for the correct hardware location for your system.
