how do i transfer files from my desktop to laptop?

It helps if both computers have the same Operating System. I use XP on mine. If you want to transfer to desktop, set the shared folder for the laptop so you can put it to the desktop.

Easy way XP shares is all you do is Right Click the folder you want shared.

Right Click the folder go to Properties

go to Sharing and check the Network Sharing and Security box and name the folder....just use whatever the folder name is, it shows it as default unless you want to change....

Then thats its. It will show a hand on the folder. Connect the crossover cable to both ethernet ports and wait a few then go to My Network Places on the computer you want the files to and start transferring.

Easiest and fastest way for me was to burn lots of CD's. If you want to use your cat cable, go to walmart, buy a home network thing that splits an internet line into 4 or 5 lines, and connect both computers. Then you should be able to access each others shared folders. I'm actually doing this right now cause I don't have any more cd's.

Attach the crossover cable between the two computers. Setup both computers network adaptors to have similar IP addresses and subnet masks. (ex: 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101) Make sure they are both in the same "workgroup". You may need to shut down or edit your firewall settings to allow connections for computers on your Local network.

Share the files you want to copy on the one PC by right clicking on them in Windows explorer and clicking properties. Then click the Sharing Tab. Under Network sharing and security, check the box to share the folder on the network. On the other computer, you should click on "My Network Places" and then "View Workgroup computers". You should see the other PC listed and should be able to click on it and find your files just like you would in Windows Explorer. You should then just have to copy and paste the files.

you should be able to make a small network between the two computers and transfer the files from one to the other. if u are using xp, you can create the network using the 'setup a home or office network' option in my network places

you could use a portable hard rive such as a mp3 player to store and the transfere the data or just burn a data CD
