Stories like The Hobbit are derived from ancient mythology. They are epic quests. A quest is a difficult journey where the hero encounter problems and has to solve them. There are battle sometimes huge, sometimes the hero must overcome a Titan opponent. It is an age old tale told over and over again.

Tolkien was strongly influenced by Anglo-Saxon literature, Germanic and Norse mythologies, Finnish mythology, the Bible, and Greek mythology.[41] The works most often cited as sources for Tolkien's stories include Beowulf, the Kalevala, the Poetic Edda, the Volsunga saga and the Hervarar saga.[42] Tolkien himself acknowledged Homer, Sophocles, and the Kalevala as influences or sources for some of his stories and ideas.[43] His borrowings also came from numerous Middle English works and poems. A major philosophical influence on his writing is King Alfred's Anglo-Saxon version of Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy known as the Lays of Boethius.[44] Characters in The Lord of the Rings such as Frodo, Treebeard, and Elrond make noticeably Boethian remarks.

The story of Perseus is a quest tale, Beowulf, Harry Potter, Rocky etc. The names and places change but the plot remains the same or similar.

  • A fairly good, contemporary selection would be Christopher Paolini's books: Eragon and Eldest. Many of the patterns present in The Hobbit are manifested here as well. Moreover, Paolini's books are targeted at more or less the same audience as The Hobbit, so if you liked the latter, then you may enjoy the former as well.

I'm assuming you're looking for the same kind of "journey" of the main character, rather than books about the exact same things..

    Beowolf

    Grendel

Eaters of the Dead - Michael Crichton

The Finnsburg Encounter: A Novel - Matthew Dickerson

Whose Song Is Sung - Frank Shaefer

    Crashlander - Larry Niven

The Legacy of Heorot - Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Steve Barnes

probably many more, they're all essentially based on the Scandinavian legend of Beowulf

The books I'm about to give are adventurous and action-related, but are not continuations of The Hobbit, as I'm sure you'd know. Terry Brooks-- Shannara series is quite adventurous. Harry Potter series is very good, too. Hope you like them!
