Do Japanese perms work on African American Hair?

What's the deal? I scanned the interenet for information on it. Some say go for it. Some say stay away from it because it will fry your hair like burnt barbie hair in a toaster. Some say it doesn't work at all. I can't get a clear idea on it.

And worst of all, I can't find pics - though I heard that Tyra Banks uses the Yuko system (but she still wears a weave most times when she's out. Possible damage?). Have you or anyone you know with black hair had any experiance with Japanese perms. Do you have pics availible. I'm really curious and I would like to know more about it.

I'd be extremely grateful on any solid pieces of information!

If you are talking about Japanese hair straightening, it does not work on African American hair. Please do not waste your money and time on it. My friend used to work for a Japanese beauty salon in New Jersey. She said that when Avril Lavigne first came out with that super straight hair, there were many white girls who wanted to be like her. One day, an African American girl came to the salon to do the Japanese hair straightening, but it did not work. There was no damage to her hair. It just did not work.

I had my hair straightened five years ago and got sleek, shiny straight hair. I had a long hair at that time, and it cost about $300! Once you get done with the Japanese hair straightening, your hair will stay straight forever. However, you need to come back for a touch up on the new growth. It will not cost much, though. I did not come back because I did not want to waste my money on straightening my hair anymore.

Anyway, the Japanese are trying to develop "hair technology," and I am sure that some day, African American people will have their hair straightened with advanced Japanese hair straightening.

One of the links below shows the list of beauty salons in NY and NJ. You can call and ask them if they can straighten African American hair.

It all depend on the texture of your hair. Since all African Americans are not born with course hair, we all may need different ways to get that look. * if your hair is course you should try washing and conditioning with deep conditioner. * blow dry until full head is not damp or you will burn yourself with the straightener. * start directly at the root with a high temp. (since it seems you indicated that your hair may be a little course) and work it slowly from the root down to the end. (do not apply grease while flat ironing try and use a moisturizing spritz) * after pressing your hair thoroughly, your hair should work well in that style if you are looking for a japanese straight look. But truthfully, since their hair is already really straight, i dont think that a japanese perm would work in you hair if that's what you were asking.

  • best bet is to find a salon in your area that carries the system and call them.

unfortunatly i have never dealt with this system

go to the website and then into the menu and it will provide you with all sorts of info.

    good luck
