If I develop my own black and white film, can I then get prints from anywhere even if they do no deveolop B&W?

Yes- you can. You just can't do the reverse (get film developed and make the prints yourself) because "corporate" developers use faster chemicals and different mechanisms to develop film- A chemical in that film will cause your pictures to turn completely grey if you make your own prints. (Look to see if they do "C" processing).
Sorry, I rambled- but yeah, just keep your negatives in a very protected space- get some negative sleeves and keep them away from any dust, etc. Store them in a cool environment and you'll be able to have the images reproduced.

Call the photography lab and ask them if they print B&W negatives. B&W negatives require different equipment than color. Some film companies, like Kodak, make B&W film that can be printed using color printing equipment (Such as Kodak T400CN). Because of digital imaging, another option is to scan your negatives and print digital prints in B&W using kiosks at some photography stores.
