Does anyone know about infants taking Zantac?
side effects and why my baby will have to have periodic blood tests while being medicated in addition to watching her personality closely for any changes.

My son was on zantac as a baby and was on it until the age of 4! Really you should have nothing to worry about. If there would be a side effect I would watch for a rash. Uncontrollable crying. But remember being a baby any medication can make them sleepy. So dont go by that. Sometimes the medicine takes a few days to really work too. If you have any concerns about your baby and the medicine call the doc or pharmacist's they can better help you. Also when you get the medicine it should say side effects right on there. A lot of people could not believe that my baby was on that and said so much stuff to make me scared! Just know your baby will be alright and this med. will really help.

Well just as an experience mom, I know that most meds are designed for adults orginally, not children. So when the only meds helpful for a child are a newer drug they need to monitor the child closely to be sure that nothing bad is going to happen. So many newer drugs lately have shown odd side effects in kids - some to the point of making kids suicidal.
Your doctor is being cautious - test & watch and you should catch anything before it is a problem - don't and who knows. Ultimately it comes down to if the med is worth potential risk to your child.
Good luck making this tough decision - and if you go for it, listen to your doctor but don't forget to follow your own gut instinct. If you think something is wrong show up at the office until they agree to hear you out.

I remember taking Zantac 75 when I was younger, around eight to ten for stomach pains, and the doctors were very wary of me taking it. Any medication for babies so young needs to be watched very closely... The reason being that they are so small and underdeveloped, especially when it comes to medication that is also used for adults. If your baby becomes strangely quiet or strangely loud, contact your doctor. If anything abnormal starts, again, contact your doctor. Even if you are not sure, it's better to be on the safe side of caution then under cautious. Good luck!

my daughter took zantac from 5 months to a year and she was never tested while being on the medication. They did to say to watch her personality but nothing changed except for she wasn't as fussy and didn't throw up as much. When she was one I just took her off of it and she is now 27 months and been just fine. Good luck I know it's hard

I don't know anything about this. But I think before I allowed my child to be on a medication that they had to take blood tests and watch for personality changes I would want a second opinion. You might want to check with another doctor and see if there are alternative medications for the problem.

Side effects of Zantac are minimum, except if the kidney is not working well, the drug can accumulate in the system and cause some mental status changes. I imagine the doc's are checking her blood to monitor kidney function, watching personality changes to see if your baby is having any mental status changes as a side effect from the drug.

I'm not sure about Zantac, but my son (three months old) is taking Axid. I believe they work pretty much the same. The note that gave me in the pharmacy along with the medication said that there were no known side effect of the drug.

They do give it if your baby has any kind if acid reflux disease or anything to do with the gasteral intestinal area, rest assured that it is in very small doses and will not harm the child, the reason behind the blood tests could be a variety of reasons your best bet would be to talk to your Dr. As for side effects since the dose is so low they shouldn't really be any

My second son had reflux and was put on Zantac when he was a month old. His reflux was better and we took him off it at 4 months old. He never had to have blood work though...so I don't know about that. We never noticed any side effects from it either. He did very well on it.

My son was on Zantac and Reglan when he had Reflux. He didnt have any side effects at all. He started growing and thriving! He went from weighing 8lbs 8oz(at 2 months) to weighing over 16lbs at 4 months. He didnt have to have blood tests..so I dont know why they would be doing that.
