Serious question about buying a home...?
Does anybody know how I would go about researching any police activity, or complaints in a specific neighborhood? My husband and I have made an offer on a beautiful home, it was accepted, and now we are trying to find out about the rest of the neighborhood, mainly right around our property.
I was told that I could ask the local Police dept., but is this correct?

Your local police station is your best resource for finding out what is going on around your neighborhood. Your second choice should be your local fire department, some would argue that this should be your first choice (these guys usually know everthing, they get around).
Next talk to your neighbors, you should get to know them anyway. Another source of information would be a local church or school and head down to the nearest coffee shop. Rumors always abound in those places.
Your local police department will also be able to give you tips on security and what to keep an eye on. Many have community support officers that will come out to your home and check it out for you.

You can inquire about sex offenders in your neighborhood and you can do it on line by going onto your police website. However you are not given the exact crime they commited nor the address of the person. So, the person living in the area could have been convicted of statutory rape at 18 with a seventeen year old and that has to be reported as a sex offender. If you go down to the police dept, you are allowed to go through the books and see who the sex offenders are who live in the area so you can get a pretty good idea of what they were convicted of and, at the very least, what they look like.

Yes it is correct. If you contact the local police department or the state police they can help you. Crime statistics and even the particulars of a report are a matter of public records. I would bet the information is probably on the web somewhere.
I would also suggest you talk to the neighbors! It will establish contact with the people you will be living with and will also show them that you are concerned with this sort of thing. Good luck!

Of course you can ask PD. Your realtor can tell you what they know. Talk to the neighbors.
