Is it okay to use cough syrup while breastfeeding?

If so, is there a particular brand that is best? Don't just tell me I should ask my doctor, I can't get a hold of her tonight and I have a really bad cough!

Update:

After doing a little more online research, I found this: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T028800.asp

"All of the commonly used antibiotics as well as both prescription and over-the-counter cold remedies (decongestants, antihistamines, and cough remedies) are safe to take while breastfeeding." -Dr. Sears

So, I kind of answered my own question. I thought I'd post it here for the benefit of others. Thanks to everyone for their answers.

Hi! I am sorry you have a bad cough. And I am so glad you are breastfeeding. You are doing the best thing a mom can do for her child. I strongly believe formula is junk food and cows milk is meant for baby cows. I nursed both my girls, and I took Robitussin very sparingly, because my nursing drug book said it has been used in pregnancy without adverse effects. You could call your pharmacist and ask his advice, they are happy to help with questions like this. I have a lot of friends that swear by tea with honey and lemon, too. Make sure you drink lots of liquids, especially water, too. Even if you aren't thirsty.

No, without first consulting you personal physician because it will cross into the breast milk, if you had to take cough med while you were pregnant stick with what the Dr. suggested at that time because it would also have crossed the placental barrier, try peppermint, hope you get to feeling better.

Something of a natural source is advisable due to the fact that whatever you ingest (swallow) will end up in your breast milk which then will be ingested by your baby. Try doing a search for homeopathic remedies for your cough.

NNNNOOOO!!! Its not safe...if you want to take cough medicine...you should breast pump enough formula to get through 3 days...that is almost inposible
