What's the purpose of those metallic stickers you sometimes find in new books?

Anyone ever purchase a new book and find a small (probably one inch by one inch) thing that looks like a gold metallic sticker with the paper backing still on, in between some random page halfway through?

They have a raised pattern on them, and almost remind me of a computer chip, although I don't think they're sturdy enough to be that.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? What's the purpose of those things and what are they called?

Generally these are termed "loss prevention devices" and they are unpowered circuits that work by receiving and echoing back a radio frequency "ping" from a transmitter in the store where the books are sold. They are deactivated at the checkout when you buy the book. Normally they are used to catch people who are "shoplifting" or trying to leave the store without paying for the book - by setting off an alarm at the entrance or exits where the transmitter is set up.

They have a very simple passive circuit that only works at close range to the transmitter - which is why they don't set off the detector unless you are very close to them or between the sides of the detector .

I'm pretty sure they're a security device placed in there by the store so that the alarm at the shop door goes off if you walk out without the book being scanned.

It's so the government can track the subversive books. They're connected to the chip in your brain and can sterilize you if you start reading too much. The government will go to any length to stop Americans for becoming more intelligent. They're still mad about the 1960s.

They are also on DVDs. Try to walk through the door with the book and you'll find out what it's for.

It's an alarm. It will go off at the door if you try to steal the book.

    It's there to prevent shoplifting.

It acts as an alarm when you exit the store. It is cleared at the register when you pay.

It's one of many different types of security tags.

They beep when you take 'em outta the store without paying. So, pull it out and then see if you can stick it to the man... Good luck!
