I am surprised,(*at some of the responses) there are different kinds of eagles, than just, 'Bald Eagles'!There are several different types of hawks, as well.Generally, speaking, yes, most eagles are 'still' going to possess a wider wingspan, than even large hawks. The Bald Eagle's head and tail doesn't generally turn white, until, it reahes maturity, and turns whiter as the bird grows older. It makes a difference, depending what area of the country, that you're in, in whether or not, there, are even any species of eagles, possibly present.

    EX:

I live in Ohio, in an area, where, currently, we have a larger than normal 'eagle' population. And, recently, I just saw(*within that last two weeks) and "extremely" large hawk, that I had to look 'twice' at to make sure it was not a 'young' eaglet.

Mature eagles are much larger than hawks. Bald eagles have the characteristic white head and tail, whereas hawks are generally various shades of brown, with some having very light colored undersides. An immature bald eagle could more easily be confused with a hawk though.

i will not have faith some people have by no ability heard of a Kite. besides they're all birds of prey and all very distinctive. Eagles have a tendency to be huge and pass after larger prey than Hawks, or the Falcon-like Kite. Kites and Falcons could be experienced to seek for you.

Simple, if your can, look at the brids tail. If its white, its and eagle, if not its a hawk. Plus, eagles have a wider wing span, hawks are more erodinamic and therefor have smaller wings.

You can tell the difference by the way they flap their wings.
