My chihuahua has milk but she can't be pregnant!?
I noticed that her nipples were swollen and red with milk dripping out of them and I got so puzzled and worried because she CANNOT be pregnant - no other male dogs around, only another female. Is this normal? Should I be worried? It's been about a month and a half since she's last been in heat.

Yep, false pregnancy. I have a chihuahua also and she did that before I had her spayed. They think they are pregnant and they actually produce milk. My chi would get her toys and hide under the bed or in the closet with them and if we came near her, she would growl and show her teeth protecting her "babies". We would have to grab the toys when she came out to eat and hide them. She would look for them for a day or so and then forget it and go back to normal. We went to the vet and he told us it was fairly common for dogs to have false pregnancies and I have found out since that some women also have false pregnancy and grow big stomachs and get milk and think they feel the baby move.....Wierd huh?..........

no need to worry, and you don't have to take her to the vet, dogs can go through what is called a false pregnancy, and they will have all the symptoms of being pregnant, with no pups. They will get their milk, some will build a nest, and they will get fat. As long as you KNOW without a doubt that she is not then don't worry about it, and she will dry up when her body thinks that it is time. It is not really all that uncommon sometimes so don't worry about it

Dogs (& cats) can have what's called false pregnancy. Their body produces milk and they will gain weight as though they were pregnant but they aren't. It's caused by their hormones. The only way to prevent it is to have her spayed. It's a good idea to take her in to your vet just in case there is something else going on though.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Y'know, I jsut saw on the news not too long ago that an animal actually started lactating and feeding a stray animal who was in need of food...... I had NEVER heard of this and I live on a farm and see weird stuff evry day... but apparantly it is entirley possible.
She may actually believe she is pregnant but isnt and has begun producing milk, if another pet/herself is drinking it she will keep producing it....i would imagine
Take her to a vet.... it is silly to sit around wondering what if, and why.. and if she is in danger it is best to get her fixed up ASAP.
I wish you and your pooch the very best =)

My dog went through that. She produced milk too. It's a false pregnancy. They think they are pregnant. My dog took my shoes, my clothes...anything with my scent and nested with all the stuff like they were her pups. It lasted for over a week. I slowly took a "pup" away each day. You might want to consult your vet just in case.

Your dog IS pregnant! Take her to the Vet immediately. They can check to make sure the puppies aren't too big for her to have them naturally (since you don't know what kind of dog she bred with).
I was in this SAME situation recently. My Yorkie mix bred with my Golder Retreiver! Doesn't sound possible, but it happened!
The puppy is BEAUTIFUL! But, it cost me a $500.00 c-section bill.
I didn't think there was any way possible MY dog could be pregnant either. I discovered it the same way you have.
And, your time frame is RIGHT ON!
GOOD LUCK!!

its very common for dogs to go thru false pregnancy. They will milk up, even start taking a toy and believing its there puppy. If you have no intention of ever breeding your dog then please spay her. Dogs can get pyometra which can be deadly if untreated.

either she got pregnant and you didn't know about it or her body thinks its pregnant and she is in a false pregnancy and yes that can happen. call a vet.
