During swimming practices (high school team), is it true that lane 1 is for the fastest swimmers?

it just depends on the coach, but yes at practice for my old club, the goal was to work your way up the lanes, sort of like a ranking system until you got to the lead swimmer in lane 1, but at meets you want lane 4

in our pool lane one is for the slowest swimmers. Last year the middle of the pool used to be the fastest (lane 4)...but now lane 6 is the fastest

No! Lane 4 is for the fastest!

Usually the lanes closest to the walls are slower. When you swim water resistance is pushed in front of you. Like dropping a rock in the water ripples go out. If those ripples hit something solid, like the wall, they bounce back into the swimmer creating more drag/resistance. Some pools are designed with overflow lips on the side to minimize this affect. If the "ripple" hits a lane line the rings on the line dissipate the ripple some with minimal bounce back or going on through to the other lane (not your problem). I suggest timing your self in each lane with a good rest period in between and seeing for yourself.

The lanes in the middle are the fastest.

Actually, the fastest swimmers were usually in the middle lanes. Atleast that was how it was when I was on swim team (captain senior year 01')

This is not true. It all depends on the coach. My Coach puts the slower swimmers in lane one because she can easily see them from the side, and stop them when they are doing something wrong, but thats only in the beginning, after that, she mixes us up into each stroke, and it really doesn't matter what lane your in, because we have the fast backstrokers, and the slow backstrokers in one lane, and all the freestylers in another, and the imers' in another, so everyone is mixed.
