How much time should my anole spend under UV lamps?

I'm a new owner, and have been letting the anole have roughly 12 hours. None of the reading I've done has given a real answer to if this is too long or too short a period. Any anole owners know a good rule of thumb?

    Turn it on during the day and off at night

    12 hours should be just fine.
