When you transfer a title to someone, does it also transfer the license plate?
My husband is selling his motorcycle to another gentleman today and he is transferring the title over to this man. Do we need to remove the license plate that we have on the motorcycle, or will it be okay to keep the license plate on the bike since the purchaser will now have the title?

The original owner is required to turn in their old plates. I'm in La. and turned mine plates in a day late; a "flag" was put on my stuff and when I went to renew my driver's license it took a while to get that straight.
Another senerio, I sold a car to a friend and he DID NOT register it in his name; left the car on the side of the road. Guess who they contacted? Me. Make sure the person you're selling the item (car, motocycle) to REGISTERS it in their name.

I am sure that this depends on the state, but generally no, the plate belongs to you. The new owner will need to get his own plates. The motorcycle must be titled in the new owner’s name before it can be registered and a new plate issued. Legally, the new owner should not drive the vehicle before it is plated, but usually, this is not practical. If they must drive it, they should keep the signed over title with them (or better yet, a bill of sale) until they can get new plates - in case they get stopped by police. In most states, there is a deadline (in mine it is 31 days) to get a plate for a purchased vehicle. If they do not get a new plate by then, they will have to pay a penalty.

it depends on the state you live in. In Michigan , where I live, The plate is owned by the person who purchased it and is not transferred to the new owner. In some other states the plate is permanently assigned to a specific vehicle. You should accompany the new owner to the Secretary of State office and ensure that the proper paperwork is completed and that the vehicle gets registered in the buyers name. As long as the vehicle is registered in your name you could be held responsible for any accidents.

No. The new owner will have to obtain a new license plate for the motorcycle that your husband will sell it to. Clear-cut and simple.

It depends on the State or Province. In some States the plates belong to the registered owner, and in others they belong to the vehicle. So check with your DMV.

No title and license are separate requirements at least in Illinois where I live and I can,t imagine it would be different in other states but you could always check with the DMV I suppose to be sure.
