Are you the opposite of your partner?

My partner and I are totally the opposite in everything. We have been together for 5 years and life together is getting better. We are very independent now than in the beginning. I learned a lot since I met him and wouldn't change it for anything. I was a follower and a total drama queen. Does this come with age or experience? I think both!

Update:

Bossymissy: Are you still a freshman in school? EWWW!

Update 2:

Rudecatt:I love your hollow answer!

Yes, but we're teaching each other a lot. I find that I whine less and cuss less because of her influence. She cried when Steve Irwin died, then insisted that she wouldn't have done that before I moved in.

There are a lot of things. She's very stoic, very quiet, very ladylike and proper underneath her tough attitude and punk look. I'm talkative and emotional and much less proper and ladylike than I look. She blushes at a bit of attention, I'm the one dancing on the table and singing karaoke on nothing but Diet Pepsi. She swaggers purposefully; I walk and talk slowly. She moves and acts; I think long and hard and can't stick with exercise unless it's fun. We're both creative, but in different ways. I love color, she loves gray and black. We fight over home decor--she wants black and metal and glass all over; my style gets called "traditional". She can balance the checkbook, I can't. She spends freely, I cut coupons and firmly believe in doing things myself.

When we were kids, I got 790 in language and 510 in math on my SAT; she got 790 in math and 510 in language.

Oh, and I was born and raised in Florida, while she was born and raised in Siberia. Can't get much more opposite than that!

Age and Experience...it is said that there are 3 distinct stages of love relationships...1)Love with someone who is anytime, anywhere, anybody, anything and we learn from this one 2) self..we fall in love with someone VERY much like our selves...doesn't last too long, But we learn about ourselves...and 3) we fall in love with what is different than ourselve, usually opposite in the bedroom, but with shared goals and dreams. Some guys go through all stages with one person, each changing as time and experience grows, some have 3 (or more) distinct lovers to achieve this...but it isn't until we hit the "opposite" that we can actually settle down and be comfortable. IF both wanted the same thing in the bedroom, I suspect there would be some real problems.

Sounds to me as if you have gone through at least two stages with the same guy. I agree...all that drama can just wear ya down and out. I am happy your survived, he survived, and things are good. Good luck and love in life.

my last girlfriend and i were complete opposites. we were together for about 3 years. my current girlfriend just celebrated our first anniversary and we are very much alike. We look alike, we're both butch, we both have short, colorful hair (mine's red right now and hers is purple), we're both precocious and share a love of biology, genetics, and tarsiers. We are certainly different in other ways, but more alike than not.

I don't think it actually matters how alike or different two partners are. I remember back in my social psych class learning about how compatibility of personality traits is pretty much irrevevant. what matters is that both partners give into the relationship as much as they recieve. THAT is the key to a long-lasting love.

that and, in my opinion, compatible sex drives. you won't get far with one partner constantly feeling rejected and the other constantly feeling pressured. This is something i find straight people have a real problem with...

  • My partner and I are total opposites.

Age or experience? I believe it's irrelevant. I accept people for who they are, just like others for myself.

My partner has everything I want that I don't have and it balances us both quite well. We, like you, have learned from each other what we lack.

I believe it's the perfect relationship.

    Congrats on 5 years!!!!!

My partner and I are opposites - totally. We have been together for 5 years. Works out pretty good. Of course her Paxil helps out a lot.

In some ways. I'm kind of introverted and shy while she an extrovert who used to play keyboard and bass guitar in a band. She's a soft butch while I'm a Subbie lipstick, but we've been together almost five years and haven't had our first argument yet.

I so am the opposite of my girl. We like different food, music, movies...we dress very different, we are physically very different. But, I think we complement each other, so it's all good :)
