Why don't golfers get their eye down to ground level when they line up a putt on the green?

Sure, they would probably have to lie down on the green to do it, but the sight line ought to be more accurate.

they would rather not look silly, or they don't want to be embarrassed when they miss and it looked like they were really trying hard.

Some golfers DO bend down to ground level and take a look when lining up their putts. it's down to individual practice. As you putt more you may decide that you can tell how the ball will travel without needing to do that - practice makes perfect and all that. When you think about it a lot of putts are very similar to one another so you do get to know roughly how to proceed pretty quickly

Not even close! The green putting line is three dimensional and lying down to determine direction would not capture the break or slant of the green. Good idea if the green was perfectly flat and the length of the putt didn't matter. It Isn't.

They don't because they can't. Even if they could they would probably still miss the putt. Putting is to golf as pitching is to baseball or shooting is to basket ball. It is a reaction. Look at the hole and let your instincts and reflexes react to make the putt.

A few do. Camilo Villegas on the PGA tour bends down on one knee until his head is about a foot off the ground to read putts.

im not sure if you would get a better perspective at ground level. you would probably not ber able to see more distant breaks as well, which incidently effect ball direction more because the ball is travelling slower. also, this could severely affect the shots of your fellow group if you lie down across their putting lines.

more importantly, its impractical. people are too lazy, your clothes would get dirty and you would look stupid.

Because Captain Hook Eye, after hitting the golf ball it never does go into the correct direction. even for the more experience golfers..

its called being good. putting is not easy and when u get down to ground level you can see the slope of the green and see how the ball will roll. this way you can tell where you have to place the ball so taht it will roll in the hole.
