Wireless router problems?

More packets are being received than sent. Periodically it will just go out and then come back, then repeat for several minutes. Even happens with only one computer on. Updated the firmware. I dont have any neighbors so its not people freeloading off of my internet. Router is a D-Link and has been doing these things for about 6 months now.

Update:

Normal operation that I have seen is more packets sent than recieved. I have no antivirus or spyware problems. I have reset and unplugged the router physically and electronically. Its just random when it does it.

Thats your problem, go with Linksys. Formed from Cisco. Try that. Try the Linksys WRT54G, its what i have and i love it.

    There's nothing wrong with D-Link.

That actually sounds pretty normal. Even when you are just sitting around and not doing anything, your computer will send packets to try and see if there are any new computers on your network, it's nothing to be worried about.

If you are worried that you may have a virus or spyware, then I would suggest that you go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and download the free version of AVG antivirus and Ewido. Ewido will take care of a lot of spyware.

I'm a computer tech and these are two tools I use a lot.

Alarm systems in your area can cause interference with wireless networks. I had similar issues that you are experiencing now. Once I got rid of the wireless network and routed cables all over my home, I did not have that issue any longer.

have you tried to eset your router by unplugging it, then plugging it back up and letting it reset itself?
