Places to stay in New York? Cheap and central...?

Me and my girlfriend are going to New York in October and I'm looking for a good place to stay - though not too expensive. Any suggestions?

    New York, NY, 100xx

    Clean and nice. Upper West Side, near Columbia University and St John the Divine. 3 minutes from subway.

    It's a youth hostell, but some private rooms are available too...
