photoshop or fireworks experts is there a way?
to take a 800 x 375 graphic that is suppose to be a banner and make it 800x100 and make it not look distorted?????

You have 2 choices:
First of all notice that in this situation you can not use “Canvas Size” command and have just some free spaces around your image, because the result image is smaller than the original canvas size and you will have some clipping if you have a layer and auto-cropping if you have a flattened layer.
Therefore using the “Crop” command will has the same effect for you, but you can control the boundaries of this crop.
Second choice is using “Transform” commands, but in your case with them you will have a distorted image.
Although these are fixed technical solutions and you can mix them together and according to your picture contents, have some crop and some transform. Test for best mixture and result.

make sure your constrain proportions are ticked in your image size which you will find under image on the top of photoshop before deciding to re-adjust your image not to sure if you will get it to 800 x 100 might have to crop a little a bit, not to sure on fireworks, don't use it as much.

change the canvas size and and realign the desing elements into the frame.
