Lots of things can give u cavities, from meds (legal and not legal) to sugar drinks(soda, juice, etc.) candies, gum (not sugar free) to just plain bad home hygiene care. If you go every 6mos for reg. cleanings and check ups and work at home to keep your mouth healthy you can turn your sad mouth in to a happy mouth. Remember to brush and floss at least twice a day, especially before bed. Be true to your teeth for some day they may false you!

Cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth consume simple sugars, converting them into acid plaque. Acid plaque is different from the periodontal plaque that causes "Gum Disease." The acid plaque produced by these bacteria cause the hard inorganic layers of the enamel and dentin to soften. The softened layers are then dissolved by saliva, leaving a hole (cavity) in the tooth. Unless filled by a dentist, the cavity can continue to erode and damage the inner pulp of the tooth. Damage to the pulp can lead to pulp death, infection and tooth abscess. Therefore, pulp damage will necessitate either tooth extraction or a root canal procedure where the dying pulp is removed and replaced with an inert material. Brush your teeth at lease twice a day.

You can get cavities by not brushing you teeth, by not recieving flouride, or it can be a hereditary issue. In most cases, people that don't brush properly will have plaque build up which in time will harden or calcify. once the cavity is formed it's by-productswill eat through your enamel like slow working acid. If it gets past your enamel and into the dentin, it can spred like wildfire. the dentin is porous and is the last defense protecting the nerve of a tooth.

What Kris said. I had really bad teeth all thru school. I thought I was doing a decent job brushing and all, but my teeth just kept falling apart no matter what I did. Finally had them all pulled soon as I was 18. Most of my family has no teeth or dentures.
