A server is any computer that is used to send, receive, or relay data to other nodes on a network. In simpler terms, this means a server is any computer that “serves” other computers on the network. Now, servers come in all shapes and sizes. There is nothing holier about a Dell Power Edge server over any other server, such as a Compaq Presario made in 1993. There is obviously a difference in all sorts of things: form factor, speed, memory, and so forth. However, because a server's only requirement is that it must serve , then any computer with a network card should make a fine server.

Most decent PC's have room for an additional hard drive, Dell is the exception on their low end pcs they are very hard to expand.
I took an older HP PC that was pretty nice, replaced the hard drive and installed W2003 AD Server for testing purposes at home.
You could dual boot your PC with server and XP on different partitions.

If you have a PC that ran Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server should run fine on it.

Sure you can. Depending on the pc, you may have to beef up the memory and the HD space (and also depending what you want to use it for). You may also have to add some specialty software to it too (Webserver, game server, database server, ect)
