Why do old water pipes squeal?

Seriously. I live in an old home & when the water mixture of hot & cold are just right the pipes often squeal so loudly I have to readjust the two temperatures just to stop it.

It has to do with the amount of mixed volume creating a high pitched chatter that the plumbing magnifies. If you have a old garden hose that the brass end has been cut off(male end) you can simulate this using only cold water by pitching the end of the hose so that it will change the velocity which creates a noise but not as near as loud. Its a velocity / pressure noise.

It is the fixture that is making the noise. You can either rebuild the valves or replace it.

    Source(s): been there done that.

it's not the pipes making the actual noise, it's the shower valve.
