Update:
In 1965 or 66 the marine Editor of the Cleveland "Plain Dealer"in his column said the Stmr Earnest T Weir, an Ore Carrier and NOAA Weathership recorded winds of 122 knts for 3 min.

Source(s): I looked through this and found high 90kt figures for Huron and Michigan. http://www.boatnerd.com/facts-figures/coastpil.htm EDIT: Guess that 122kt figure didn't make it into the boatnerd site. Did you just answer your own question?
