It would be according to your style of your living area. If country or shabby shek, an old window framewith white paint peeling off with the glass is nice. You can wind a vine of flowers(color of your room or off white if wall is colored) around it or put pics or photos of pretty flowers/kids/black and white or sepia antiques pics behind the glass to be personal. For comtemporary/modern-use shelfs from Ikea, the ones that you can't see how they are hanging, and put a few small vases or photos, etc on them. You could do one large or three at different heights. You could also use photos of a similar nature like architecture or scenery and place them in identical frames and mats in about a 12x 14 or 16x20 size.Put up 2 with 2 underneath to give height and balance the height of you entertainment center or hutch.Or put up three large photos across the width of the sofa and about 18 -24 inches above the back of the sofa. You could take pics of your kids, dog or spouse or all of you and make them look like Warhol'sin the colors of your room on your computer and then frame them for a new look! You could also use votives in one of the nice holders that are horizontal/vertical with leaves or grapes designs. Or use one large picture with a small shelf under it with a few small items on it and votive or candle holders on each side of the pic for a more traditional look.I have a grouping of similiar antique paintings and prints in mostly greens above my sofa and always get good comments on it.If you are young and love music you can do posters with simple frames or use records or cds as your art.Best wishes and I hope I have helped some. Maybe I have sparked a thought or given you an idea!Have fun! I love decorating!

Anything goes here. It all has to do with personal style. Your best bet is to look around the room. What colors are you using? Do you just love the color on the curtains? Is it the pattern on the throw pillows? Pull a color out of there and paint that one wall that dramatic color that just "sings" to you. Like the mural idea, but short on funds? When your done painting the wall (or if you already like the color) paint "frames" on the wall in a white, brown, black (whatever feels right to you) and rent a projector. Use the projector to project pictures that you like - whether a floral or a scene or a landscape- and trace them into the frames. Paint them simularly to the origanal or spice it up with your one color palete. Use an acrylic paint to "color" in your "drawings". Remember it's just paint have fun with it.

go yard-saling and buy a ton of frames for really cheap. Buy all different sizes and shapes then spray paint them a single color, (think bright, or metalic, something dramatic) Then frame drawings, photos, or images cropped out of magazines. Hang the frames across the hole wall in a random order, or in a shape.

If you have a collection of items that you can hang, like mirrors, arrange them on the floor in different ways until something catches your eye.

I once hung a mirror and used border paper to frame around the mirror. Or use stencil.

How about a cool mirror? Or a set of two prints by artists that you really like in some nice frames?

be the envy of the block and instead of hanging a picture...hire a mural painter to paint a mural of your favorite person, place ,thing,it will give a lot of intrest to the wall and personalize the space with class.

Speakers to surround sound, mirror, Excaliber, stuffed dead animal head, cooly designed large blanket or rug, gun rack, pool cues, keg-erator, cool beer logo sign/mirror, guitar/bass, cool antique oddities.

buy a bunch of cheap blank cds and hang them up. it adds a splash of color and reflects light. also double as a mirror if you need one and mirrors open up spaces.
